Dragonfly Element
Chapter 1: Unexpected New Friend
by Nathan Sky
Every night my mother would tell me stories about her family driven away by the Germanic tribes in central Europe. And stories about my father the wise man that saved momma and her family. However nothing could save her family from breaking apart. She fell in love with the wise man which was the worst crime of all and her family despised her for it. Father was so different and strange to them that they became terrified of him. They did not like him and mistook him for a witch thus sealing my mothers' fate. My father died before I was born and my mother raised me on her own. She told me stories about father not only being the wise man but the shaman man too. His way of life was strange to her at first but unlike her family she kept an open mind.
"Do you hear it Aingeal?" Cheveyo would lift a hand cupping his ear. "Hear what Cheveyo?" My mother would give a curious look around as if expecting to hear something just as my father was. She knew though that she wasn't in tune with nature like daddy though. "The rain will fall soon to mark the oncoming spring season." As usual he would always be right. At least that's how my mother described him to me. Maybe I will be like him someday.
My dream was crushed after my mother died though. I was only 16 and after that I've had to take care of myself having lost my way more times than I can count. I have done things that I am not proud of but I did it to survive and to help those in need. I've stolen, conned, and fought. That is until I met Megan. Oh, sweet selfless Megan my best friend ever.
...
I first saw Megan in the crowd of people outside in the Wexford Square. I wasn't paying too much attention to the male messenger on the stage. "Starting tomorrow at sundown there will be a curfew enforced for every citizen in Wexford due to the strange disappearances of young women." There I saw her with her beautiful red curls, beautiful round face, and unusual dark eyes. 'That's half of the truth. Men have been disappearing too but they don't want to admit it. I guess saying so would make men look weak and cause a panic.' I was halfway into thought and she probably thought that I was staring. I was looking past her though in deep thought until she gave an infectious smile in my direction. Snapping out of my thoughts I lifted my eyebrows and widened my eyes. Embarrassed I turned my head my face burning a deep red my blue eyes staring at the ground.
The crowd of people finally dispersed and I was left alone in my thoughts. "Do you do that often?" Startled I turned towards the voice. "D-Do what?" It was her again, the redhead that I saw earlier in the crowd. The woman giggled and smiled just like earlier which made me feel strangely at ease. "Stare at people." Embarrassment crept into my face once more and my body stiffened. "I was deep in thought." The look of disbelief on her face. "I wasn't looking at you." I assured her but was I trying to convince myself more or her? To me this woman was absolutely beautiful but that wasn't what drew me to her. It's strange to say but I think it was something special about her and I could feel it. "Hmm...Well alright." I let out a breath not knowing that I was even holding one in. Good this woman believed me. Not that it really mattered I guess. "Well nice talking to you..." I turned to leave, "Megan. My name is Megan." Now we are on a first name basis now? "Keira." Why I gave her my name I will never know. I turned and headed down the street past the small Apothecary shop.
...
The very next day I was out in the city walking from stand to stand pocketing small objects and food into my bag. Needless to say I didn't know that I was being followed. All of this wasn't for me. It was for the hopeless, for those that cannot afford anything. I did this whenever I saw people suffering and felt that my actions were justified. Not everyone could agree though. I reached to pick something else up, "Hey what do you think you are doing?!" Busted. Dropping the object I took off running and the owner gave chase. "Stop. Thief!" I don't know what happened but I tripped over something and the man grabbed me by the scruff wrenching me up to my feet. "Let's see how a few days inside the dungeon will do for you."He grabbed my arm about to take me away until a woman pushed her way through the crowd of gathering citizens. "Wait. I know this woman." Surprised I noticed it was Megan and I started to hold my breath, afraid of what was to happen next. "That's good and all Megan but this woman just tried to steal from me." Megan placed a hand on the man's shoulder. "I know, but please have a heart. People are suffering in this town so much that they feel the need to steal to bring food to their families. Remember you were like them once too. Please. I will make her an honest woman. I will become responsible for her." The grip on my arm loosened and he glanced between us making a calculating decision. "Yes Megan. I believe you will." Finally I was able to slip out of his grip a low breath escaping my lips.
Megan looped her arm with mine and walked me towards the Wexford Square. "Thanks." I didn't know what else to say but was taken aback when she stopped and folded her arms staring at me, "I meant what I said. I will make you an honest woman." She looked so serious until she smiled, "And my friend." I was dumbstruck. Why would this woman want to be my friend? Her words sunk in and she kept walking, "Come along Keira. I have much to teach you."
Critique away. >.> And I would love some suggestions too. Please and thank you.
